Possessed

(Mark 10: 17  30)

Looking at his disciples, Jesus said, “Do you have any idea how difficult it is for people who ‘have it all’ to enter God’s kingdom?” The disciples couldn’t believe what they were hearing, but Jesus kept on: “You can’t imagine how difficult. I’d say it’s easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than for the rich to get into God’s kingdom.” (Mark 10: 23 – 25)

The lie about all of our stuff is this: We possess it. In fact, our possessions own us more powerfully than we can ever hope to claim them. Make a mental list of what you think you’ve got: home, car, lawn, furniture, bank accounts, education, title, position, relationships, and responsibilities. Whatever we have, it also has us. And what it costs us to maintain all of our stuff goes much deeper than our wallets. It takes time and life and effort and will to keep all the stuff of our lives in place.

Even the poorest person on the planet possesses something; the goal isn’t to renounce all resources because we can’t. We’d still be in possession of our lives. The spiritual goal is to surrender what we possess, so that it can’t make us less free. If we surrender our resources to God’s purposes, then no one can take anything from us. We become liberated when our worldly wealth is at the disposal of God’s will. Those who walk off with heavy hearts are dragging their possessions with them.

Which of your possessions is the most burdensome for you?

PRAY

We celebrate your love and presence, O God. May we trust that love and respond to your presence when your call cuts against our expectations or plans. Open us, then, to your compassion that seeks not what is easy for us, but what is best. Amen.

Ponder

Tread lightly in your relationships. Make fewer demands, give without expecting a return. Free them, and yourself, from the burden of expectations. “No chance at all if you think you can pull it off by yourself. Every chance in the world if you let God do it.”

KID’S CORNER

Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. (Psalm 90: 14)

Each morning when you get up, you have an important choice to make: What will you think about? You could think about someone who made you angry yesterday or about something unpleasant that you’ve got to do today. On the other hand, you could think about some of the good stuff you’re going to enjoy. You can think about the friends you’re going to see. You can think about God who loves you and who will be with you all day long. Starting your day with happy thoughts is a lot more fun. It will bring more joy into your entire day!

God living among us, thank you for the good things each day brings. Amen.

PILGRIMAGE TO MEDJUGORJE: 30 May – 15 June 15 2025 (Tentative Dates) Medjugorje is not just a pilgrimage, it’s an immersion experience into a rhythm of prayer; in a setting steeped in the Lord’s peace.    This past month, the apparition site of Medjugorje was approved by the Vatican; “parishioners are called to believe and to visit.”  Having now experienced 2 pilgrimages to Medjugorje myself, I’m experiencing a calling to bring others to this Holy place.    If you have heard, been curious, or know nothing about Medjugorje, perhaps you are praying for a conversion of heart for someone, or you are wanting to deepen your own commitment to prayer life; then Mary is extending an invitation to you to come to Medjugorje. I will be taking a small group (10-12) on a 10 day experience of prayer, joy and peace.  This will not be a holiday nor a sightseeing adventure.   It will be a full pilgrimage with immersion into Daily Mass, Daily Adoration, Prayer, Rosary, Reflection and Fasting.   A once in a lifetime opportunity to say“YES” to deepening your relationship with Mary and Jesus.  If you would like to join this pilgrimage, or find out more details/costings call Celia Thomas on 027 3250 169.  I am praying you will respond to Mary’s calling.
