Ransom for Many
(Mark 10: 35 – 45)
Jesus got the disciples together to settle things down. “Whoever wants to be great must become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among youmust be your slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not to be served – and then to give away his life in exchange for many who are held hostage.”
(Mark 10: 43 – 45)
While Jesus is talking about becoming ransom, his followers are looking for glory. No wonder Jesus groans that they don’t know what they’re talking about. Of the four gospel writers, Mark is most likely to draw the disciples as out-and-out dumbbells. Since it’s the first of the gospels to be written down, Mark’s depiction is likely closer to the truth than the other evangelists cared to be.
Alas, these dumbbells are closer to revealing our natural inclinations than we care to admit. We step up to drink the cup of Christ in our Eucharist without much fuss, but when it comes time to share his passion in even the smallest sense, we don’t respond to roll call. We’re willing to take part in the rituals of religion, but we’re nowhere to be found when it’s time to be ransom. Servant-hood has little appeal. Still we’re prepared to join in the finger-pointing at James and John seeking credit. We, at least, cover our aspirations a little better than they do.
When was the last time you paid the price, so that another could go free?
Pray
Patient God, we have so many questions. We demand things, and often want to know where the path will lead before we set out. Set our hearts to rest and remind us that life is made up of more questions than answers, and that that’s okay. Amen.
Ponder
Choose to be the servant who lifts up another. Avoid the limelight. Seek the dirty job. Give anonymously. Be generous with credit. Crave humility. “The Son of Man came to serve, not to be served – and then to give away his life in exchange for many who are held hostage.”
KID’S CORNER
He came to serve, not to be served – and then to give away his life in exchange for many who are held hostage. (Mark 10: 45)
Lisa likes to be first: first in line, first to be picked for teams and first to take a turn. As long as she is first, she doesn’t really care who is second, third or last. But Jesus teaches us that greatness isn’t about being first; it’s about serving others. If we focus less on ourselves, we will see more ways to help others.
Jesus, show me how I can put someone first today. Amen.

Thank you all so much for your support in advertising and providing your time for Theology on Tap on October 4 2024. Approximately 30 parishioners of all ages attended. This event was a great opportunity for PYC’s young people to meet other parish members and engage in small group discussions on the theme “the issue of evil”. PYC is very grateful to Bishop John Adams for speaking and the Cathedral Parish Staff for their time. We achieved our objective in hosting a parish-wide gathering centered on formation and friendship in a relaxed setting. We hope to hold another Theology on Tap early in the new year and encourage anyone from the parish to come along and even bring a friend. From PYC.

PILGRIMAGE TO MEDJUGORJE: 30 May – 15 June 15 2025 (Tentative Dates) Medjugorje is not just a pilgrimage, it’s an immersion experience into a rhythm of prayer; in a setting steeped in the Lord’s peace. This past month, the apparition site of Medjugorje was approved by the Vatican; “parishioners are called to believe and to visit.” Having now experienced 2 pilgrimages to Medjugorje myself, I’m experiencing a calling to bring others to this Holy place. If you have heard, been curious, or know nothing about Medjugorje, perhaps you are praying for a conversion of heart for someone, or you are wanting to deepen your own commitment to prayer life; then Mary is extending an invitation to you to come to Medjugorje. I will be taking a small group (10-12) on a 10 day experience of prayer, joy and peace. This will not be a holiday nor a sightseeing adventure. It will be a full pilgrimage with immersion into Daily Mass, Daily Adoration, Prayer, Rosary, Reflection and Fasting. A once in a lifetime opportunity to say“YES” to deepening your relationship with Mary and Jesus. If you would like to join this pilgrimage, or find out more details/costings call Celia Thomas on 027 3250 169. I am praying you will respond to Mary’s calling.
