From Dividing to Uniting
(Mark 10: 2 – 16)
The people brought children to Jesus, hoping that he might bless them. The disciples shooed them off. But Jesus was irate and let them know it: “Don’t push these children away. Don’t ever get between them and me. These children are at the very centre of life in the kingdom. Mark this: Unless you accept God’s kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you’ll never get in.” Then, gathering the children up in his arms, he laid his hands of blessing on them. (Mark 10: 13 – 16)
There are all kinds of ways to divide up the people of the world. We can divide them in half by gender or into a handful of races and colours. Or we can divide them into countries, ethnic groups, or languages. We can divide them by class, sexual orientation, political party, or aesthetic sensibility if we prefer. We can slice up the world according to economics: rich and poor works well in most places. There are the happy and the unhappy; this generation or that; saints or sinners. Or we can just use the simple compartments “us” and “them,” and add whoever we want to each box.
We can, and do, divide the world’s people into lots of little categories, each of which contains an implicit judgment on who they are. Jesus represents the opposite impulse. He doesn’t dismiss children as irrelevant. He doesn’t champion a man’s rights over a woman’s in marriage. He doesn’t put religious people in one corner, and sinners in another. Jesus presents love as the binding force which holds everyone together, rich and poor, men and women, slave and free. Can we change our way of thinking, from dividing to uniting?
Who are the “us” and “them” in your community, and how can you resist this attitude?
PRAY
Sacred Presence, from a world of injustice and pain, brokenness and frailty we come seeking your grace, longing to be enfolded by love. We seek to be challenged by Jesus’ teachings and the faithful witness of our ancestors in faith. We long to be shaped and formed into a compassionate faith community. Amen.
Ponder
Practice interrupting your life for the children in your midst. Treat the opposite sex with patience and openness. Prepare a place in your life for those who are different from you. “Unless you accept God’s kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you’ll never get in”.
KID’S CORNER
For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork. (Psalm 128: 2)
Ben’s older sister Linda is always on her phone. So, when her mum asked Linda to sprinkle lots of cinnamon on the sliced apples they were baking, Linda was still looking at her phone as she mumbled, “Sure.” Later, everyone tasted the baked apples. Yuck! Linda used lots of red pepper, not cinnamon!
When we’re careless and make mistakes, no one is happy. God wants us to care about the work we do – our handiwork. Today, do small chores carefully. You’ll be helping your family in big ways!
God living among us, help me in my work and play. Amen.

PILGRIMAGE TO MEDJUGORJE: 30 May – 15 June 15 2025 (Tentative Dates) Medjugorje is not just a pilgrimage, it’s an immersion experience into a rhythm of prayer; in a setting steeped in the Lord’s peace. This past month, the apparition site of Medjugorje was approved by the Vatican; “parishioners are called to believe and to visit.” Having now experienced 2 pilgrimages to Medjugorje myself, I’m experiencing a calling to bring others to this Holy place. If you have heard, been curious, or know nothing about Medjugorje, perhaps you are praying for a conversion of heart for someone, or you are wanting to deepen your own commitment to prayer life; then Mary is extending an invitation to you to come to Medjugorje. I will be taking a small group (10-12) on a 10 day experience of prayer, joy and peace. This will not be a holiday nor a sightseeing adventure. It will be a full pilgrimage with immersion into Daily Mass, Daily Adoration, Prayer, Rosary, Reflection and Fasting. A once in a lifetime opportunity to say“YES” to deepening your relationship with Mary and Jesus. If you would like to join this pilgrimage, or find out more details/costings call me on 027 3250 169. I am praying you will respond to Mary’s calling.
