How can we open our Cathedral again safely? A priority of Bishop John and the team is to get our Cathedral open as soon as possible. Unfortunately, due to the number of incidents over recent years and the fire this year, we need to ensure that we keep our parish home safe. It has been decided that we need volunteer ‘vergers’ – someone to welcome parishioners, the Palmerston North community and visitors when the Cathedral is open. We ask parishioners to volunteer for this role. The open hours of the Cathedral will depend on how many we can get to volunteer. If you have an hour or two each week, can assist with this or need more information, please contact the parish office (357-2891 or 027-4408544).
Volunteers Needed – Are you able to help? The Cathedral is looking for new people to help with two of our important ministries – cleaning the Cathedral and Children’s Liturgy at 9.30am Mass. If you feel called to do either of these things, please contact Meg de Joux (Pastoral Assistant) at pastoral.admin@pncathedral.org.nz or phone her on 021 965 974. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another” (1 Peter, 4:10)
Diocesan Library – There is a plethora of books for Catholic study and reading available for your enjoyment and inspiration in the Diocesan Library. For your convenience, during the month of November, there will be personnel manning the library on Tuesdays to Fridays 10:30am until 11:45am. We would be very happy if you were to come and use this time, space and valuable resources. Please access and check in through the Parish office.
Holy Rosary Celebration -October is devoted to the Holy Rosary and includes the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and May is the month we show devotion to Our Lady, Jesus’ blessed mother. Historically, during these months, parishes throughout the world have a symbolic mobilization of the blessed statue of Our Lady.
This October, in the parishes of Palmerston North, the blessed statue of Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Fatima was mobilized and welcomed into the homes of 58 families. At each home, families gathered with extended family and friends to sing and pray the rosary together. Often prayers were followed by a shared meal. The families that participated expressed heartfelt blessings of grace and humility by her presence.
To conclude the month of October, we celebrated by gathering at the Cathedral with a procession while reciting the Holy Rosary together. Following this, Bishop John celebrated Mass and in his homily encouraged the recitation of the Holy Rosary. Mass was followed by a wonderful potluck dinner and the whole experience was enjoyed by all.
Sincere appreciation and thanks to all who have contributed, even in the smallest way, to make these days beautiful and happy.
