St Joseph’s Shannon 60th Anniversary

On 23rd April St Joseph’s Church, Shannon celebrated the 60th Anniversary of being opened. The Church was opened 21st April, 1963, by the then Archbishop Reverend Peter McKeefry.

We were blessed with a fine warm day, a perfect setting for the 120 people that joined to share the celebrations. The group consisted of present parishioners, former parishioners and friends of the church.

We were privileged to have Monsignor Brian Walsh and Reverend Fr Joe Grayland join with us in celebrations.

After a brief welcome, Fr Joe blessed recently installed Tukutuku panels that have been crafted by a local family.

Mons Brian and Fr Joe celebrated Mass, during which Mons Brian preached a Homily focused on the history of the occasion and a reminder of the need for thanksgiving and gratitude for the benefits we have been fortunate to share.

Among those present were a number that attended the original opening 60 years ago. At the conclusion of Mass there was a slideshow dating back to the previous Church in Shannon. We then joined together for a very generous shared morning tea, old friendships rekindled and the over arching question, where did the time go. An outstanding feature of St Joseph’s Church is that in just a few years of opening the debt had been paid off, the Church was then consecrated. That was at that time a considerable achievement, the pride of the parishioners  being well justified.

A big thank you to those clergy whose efforts over the years have enabled Church life in our small community, especially those that serve us now. The efforts of Mons Brian and Fr Joe contributed to a very satisfactory conclusion, thank you for your efforts.

Obviously, people make a Church, so it is in thanksgiving that we remember those earlier parishioners who are no longer with us, that had made the contributions that made the Church possible.

To those people who made the effort to celebrate with us, thank you for effort it was really appreciated.

Finally the small group that organised this occasion, applause all around.

As stated earlier, the celebration was outstanding in it’s success. We have much to be thankful for.
