Passionist Family…
Kia ora koutou katoa,
With this week’s theme focusing on the Passionist Family Group Movement, I am reminded of the profound importance of family within our Catholic faith and within the communities of our Palmerston North parishes. Our family, our whanau, holds a special place in our hearts, reflecting the spirit of unity and love that lies at the core of our Catholic teachings.
In the eyes of our faith, family is more than just a biological connection; it is a divine gift, a reflection of God’s love, and an integral part of His plan for our lives. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph serves as a powerful example of familial love and support, teaching us the significance of nurturing relationships, compassion, and selflessness. Like the Holy Family, our own whanau is a sanctuary where we learn, grow, and find solace in times of difficulty.
One of the Bible verses that beautifully encapsulates the importance of family is found in the Book of Joshua 24:15, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” This verse emphasises the role of family as a foundation for faith and worship. It calls us to embrace our responsibility as spiritual leaders within our households, guiding our loved ones in the ways of the Lord.
Within our diverse and vibrant New Zealand Catholic parish, the notion of family extends beyond our immediate relatives. We are a collective of believers, bound by our shared faith and commitment to living out the Gospel values. Our parish community becomes an extended family, a safe haven where we can seek guidance, offer support, and celebrate life’s joys together.
Another verse that reminds us of the interconnectedness within our faith community is found in Galatians 6:2, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” This verse underscores the importance of supporting one another, sharing both joys and sorrows. In our parish, we embody this call by being there for each other, lending a helping hand, and offering prayers of intercession during times of need.
Through the highs and lows of life’s journey, our Catholic faith reminds us that we are never alone. We are surrounded by brothers and sisters in Christ, ready to walk beside us in times of trial and to rejoice with us in moments of triumph. Our parish community fosters a sense of belonging, embracing the richness of our cultural heritage and celebrating the uniqueness of each individual.
In this fast-paced and ever-changing world, the significance of family has never been more vital. It is a stronghold against the storms of life, a source of strength when we feel weak, and a sanctuary of love in times of uncertainty. As we embrace the essence of family, let us be mindful of the importance of forgiveness, understanding, and unconditional love – the cornerstones that bind us together.
May the spirit of unity and love that we have shared today continue to flow through our lives, nourishing our faith and strengthening the bonds that hold us together.
Ngā mihi and God bless you all
Steve
